THE GAME
Run an antique attribution bureau, investigate objects using historically grounded methods, discover the truth — then decide what you are willing to certify when money, debt, and human stories get involved.
Genuine Article is a historical investigation and puzzle game about authenticating antiques, combining an illustrated visual style with hands-on 3D object examination. Pick up, rotate and inspect objects at your bureau. Use a magnifying glass, raking light, balance scales, touchstone and acid tests, and historical reference books to examine materials, hallmarks, construction, wear and provenance. Your findings become official certificates — but the truth is not always the most profitable answer.
YOUR SIGNATURE HAS CONSEQUENCES
Discovering the truth is only half the job. You decide what becomes official: an honest finding or the answer a paying client wants. Debt and financial pressure make bribes tempting, while your certificates affect the people who trust them. Your choices have consequences and help shape the course of the story, leading to multiple endings.
Multiple endings · Moral choices · Financial pressureTHE EXAMINER’S TOOLKIT
Illustrated art direction. Hands-on 3D examination.
Choose the tools that the object and the case require.
Pick up, rotate and zoom in on objects. Inspect their surfaces, construction, wear and hidden details from different angles.
Study small hallmarks, scratches, worn surfaces and other physical clues up close.
Examine surfaces under angled lamplight to reveal shallow impressions and traces that ordinary lighting can conceal.
Compare an object against a reference weight and weigh the evidence alongside its appearance.
Make a streak on the touchstone and apply a reagent to investigate precious metals.
Compare hallmarks, makers and materials against reference books. Check the evidence rather than relying on a client’s claim.
The bureau’s reference material covers canvas, ground and pigment, including the clues found on a painting’s reverse: canvas edges, tacks and stretcher.
Read entries, compare dates and certificate numbers, and examine signs of missing pages. Written records are evidence to question, not answers to accept.
